A Triathlete Wish List For Apple Watch 2

I am going to admit it, initially I really didn’t care much about the new Apple Watch, but the more I read about it the more I am intrigued. I am just a sucker when it comes to these little gadgets, especially from Apple.

With no doubts,  the watch has the most sophisticated health and fitness tracking features of any smartwatch on the market. However, as an athlete, Apple Watch doesn’t really come with what I really want in a watch and that has nothing to do with telling time, or tracking my steps. If I am getting a Apple Watch, then I want to be able to say goodbye to my Garmin watch. I want to rock it on my runs without having to carry my iPhone with me. I want to swim with it and have it tell me my splits, number of strokes and breaths I take, and if I am swimming straight. Now that would be cool, right? You know there will be an app that will be able to tell you if you are swimming straight in open water. If not, you will get zapped on the wrist to signal if you are drifting right or left.

So, as an athlete, without further ado, here is my wish list for Apple Watch 2:

– GPS: The current watch supports GPS, but from your iPhone. Mr Cook, real runners, DON’T carry their iPhones with them. So, I want the watch to have its own GPS and save my workout internally until I am in a close range to my iPhone, then it can transfer data to my iPhone or cloud or whatever. I want to be able to measure my pace, current speed, cadence, vertical oscillation, heart rate, metrics per lap, etc.

– Full waterproof. The current watch is not waterproof. Just water resistance. The exact ratings are still unknown. You can take shower with it and wash your hands but definitely you can’t jump in a pool or take it on a swim.

– Long battery life. Exact specs of battery life are still unknown. But I want to be able to do a full Ironman on a single charge. In most iron distance races, the cutoff time is around 17 hours, so let’s make battery last at least 18 hours on a single charge.

– ANT+ Support: I know, bluetooth is the way to go but power meters are damn expensive and I won’t be replacing mine any time soon. Not all power meters support ANT+. Adding ANT+ support to the watch will wipe out Garmin as a company.

– Multisport mode. This is more of a software issue than a hardware one. Just like Garmin 910, I want to be able to turn on a multisport mode and track my swim, bike, and run and total time. This is not a deal breaker for me but it is for many athletes who can’t live without their Garmin 910.

With these features, you got me as a customer and millions of other triathletes, cyclists, swimmers, and runners, and we will be rocking the Apple Watch at every marathon, ultra marathons, triathlons, etc.
